ADHD Homework: Reduce the Start-Up Cost
For many students with ADHD, the hardest part of homework is not the academic task. It is starting. A vague command such as "Go do your homework" requires the student to decide where to work, what to do first, what materials are needed, and how long to persist.
Reduce those decisions. Create a visible launch routine: snack or movement, clear workspace, open the portal, choose one assignment, set a short timer, begin.
Try a 15-minute work sprint followed by a brief reset. Put the phone outside the work area when possible. Break large assignments into actions small enough to start: open document, write heading, find source, draft three sentences.
Praise completion of the process, not only the grade. "You started without arguing and finished two steps" reinforces a skill the student needs.
