A Simple Way to Find and Repair Homeschool Learning Gaps

A learning gap is not proof that homeschooling failed. Every student has gaps. The goal is to find the gaps that block new learning and repair those first.

Start with a low-pressure skills inventory. In reading, check decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension separately. In writing, look at sentence construction, spelling, organization, and revision. In math, determine whether the problem is calculation, fact fluency, vocabulary, or understanding the concept.

Choose one priority skill for a four-to-six-week intervention. Work on it in short sessions, several times each week, while keeping the student connected to age-appropriate ideas through read-alouds, audiobooks, discussion, or supported assignments.

Measure progress with something simple: words read accurately, multiplication facts recalled, sentences written, or problems solved independently.

Gaps become less frightening when they become specific. "Behind" is vague. "Needs practice with vowel teams" gives you somewhere to begin.

Quick takeaway: Gaps become less frightening when they become specific. "Behind" is vague. "Needs practice with vowel teams" gives you somewhere to begin.
